“This too shall pass”

In this simple expression lies the resilience of a nation.

The first image of war is a heap of rubble, twisted metal, and shattered glass. Then come the stones — countless stones, torn from walls, pillars, and the earth itself.

War is the antithesis of construction — of home, city, human beings. It is a machine that turns back time: to the time before the home, before the city, to the age before our age — the Stone Age.

“Placing stone upon stone” is, in Persian, the very expression for building.

From Genghis Khan to Alexander, from the Arabs to other conquerors, this land has seen invaders come and go.

You will pass, and after you, other cities will rise from their ashes, other buildings will be built.

In “This too shall pass” there is also the fleeting nature of the present moment. It is a message addressed to the ruler: it foretells his end — the end of tyrants, kings, and dynasties.

It says: “We will remain to watch you pass.” As we always have.
