Clare Hewitt: Everything in the forest is the forest

In 2019 Hewitt read a government report identifying rising loneliness and isolation in rural UK. She was also learning that trees communicate and thrive in sentient communities. For 5 years she worked with a circle of 12 oak trees at The Birmingham Institute of Forest Research to identify what we can learn from nature’s networks of care and symbiosis. The work includes large format 6-month – 4-year long exposures created in handmade pinhole cameras affixed to the oaks; 300 oak leaf lumen prints; soil chromatographs; subterranean images; and photographs made in lockdown by workshop participants.
