Nima Alzadeh: Doonadoon

Doonadoon, or Jameh beh Jameh, refers to the transmigration of the soul from one vessel to another, whether human, animal, or plant.

This body of work portrays followers of the Dinyari faith in Iranian Kurdistan, more commonly known as the Yaresan. I traveled to the region to witness Khavankar, a religious gathering during which people from villages and cities across the area come together to meet their spiritual leader in the village of Tut Shami. By midday, accompanied by the music of the Tanbur, participants sing collective prayers before visiting the leader and the community elders. Among the more than five hundred people in attendance, a few faces seemed to call to me. I invited them to stand before a black backdrop. They remained still before the camera, gazing directly into the lens. In their faces, time appeared not as age but as sediment, layer upon layer of lived experience, as though memory itself had been carved into the skin. These portraits are fragments of a Doon: glimpses of souls whose gazes appear as ancient as humanity itself.
